The Wipeout series helped to establish Sony's fledgling system when it was first released with great graphics and music and high speed racing. Wipeout 3 is now set to take the system out in its twilight with a bang even greater than the original. Wipeout 3 was at the show, and looking damn good.

Playing at several stations at the back of Psygnosis' booth, I played it quite a bit, (along with Rollcage Extreme), and was pretty impressed with what I saw. The graphics have undergone a major overhaul, and look absolutely excellent. They maintain a smooth framerate and run in high resolution mode, making them look that much better. The sound was also good - the usual techno type stuff (I am pretty sure big name bands are providing the music, though I did not get details on that). The analog control is excellent as well, as Sony's Dual Shock controller really gets a work out in the twisting and turning madness that is Wipeout 3. |
While I couldn't see much more than one track (which was pretty darn difficult), I could easily see that this would outclass efforts of other companies to try to duplicate the series' success. The excellent control and graphics go a long way in imparting a feeling of speed and that has always been one of Wipeout's strengths, only it is recreated in even greater quantity in this title. This title is one to look forward to this November. |
